Mental Health in Edison and Middlesex County, NJ

Mental health is a concern throughout New Jersey, including Edison and Middlesex County. Data shows that 14.6% of adults in Middlesex County have reported mental distress between 2022 and 2024, and 13% have reported depression. These rates are concerning, which is why Edison and Middlesex County have developed some initiatives and resources that residents can take advantage of.

One example is the Alternative Responses to Reduce Instances of Violence and Escalation (ARRIVE) Together. ARRIVE Together is a statewide mental health crisis response program that has recently expanded into Middlesex County. When law enforcement officers are responding to a behavioral health call, they partner with a civilian mental health screener to help with de-escalation and violence prevention.

Similar to ARRIVE Together, Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training works to better prepare law enforcement officers and behavioral health workers to handle mental health crises. It covers topics like mental health, myths and stereotypes, stigma, de-escalation strategies, and more.

Resources that residents can utilize directly include free, anonymous mental health screenings from NJMentalHealthCares, crisis hotlines, and Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)/Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meetings held throughout the community. The Catholic Charities Edison Family Service Center also provides services for people with severe, persistent mental illness who are homeless or on the verge of homelessness.

These resources provide valuable short-term support. When patients need longer-term, structured support, they should explore the outpatient programs at Rubicon Mental Health Center.

Outpatient Programs Available Near Edison, NJ

Seeking treatment for a mental health disorder is a major step in your wellness journey. However, you may be hesitant to commit to an inpatient program. Outpatient programs, like the options at Rubicon Mental Health Center, provide comprehensive treatment while still letting people handle daily responsibilities in the evenings or weekends. We have three levels of mental health programs, including:

  • Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP): This is our most intensive program, where patients attend sessions 6 hours a day, 5 days per week. It often lasts 30 to 45 days.
  • Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): This program serves as a middle ground between PHP and our Outpatient Program. Patients attend sessions for 3 hours per day, 3 to 5 days per week, and the program typically lasts for 10 to 12 weeks.
  • Outpatient Program: This is our lowest-level program, where patients attend sessions 2 to 3 days a week for an hour each day. The program length will vary based on the patient’s needs.

To ensure each patient is placed in the right program, our master’s-level mental health professionals perform a comprehensive clinical assessment on each patient when they arrive.
